Genomics Gateway Workshop Inspires Next Generation of Molecular Scientists
The just-concluded Genomics Gateway Workshop, held from October 29 to 31, 2025, has been hailed as a transformative milestone in advancing genomic literacy and hands-on scientific training among young scholars in Nigeria. The three-day intensive program brought together aspiring scientists, providing them with practical exposure to cutting-edge molecular biology and genomics techniques.
Organized with a mission to build capacity for future innovation in biotechnology, the workshop equipped participants with foundational laboratory skills, modern research techniques, and the confidence to pursue advanced careers in the life sciences.

A Dynamic Start on Day 1: Molecular Foundations and Laboratory Skills
The workshop opened on October 29 to an atmosphere buzzing with curiosity and scientific enthusiasm. Participants began their journey into the world of genomics by exploring the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology, understanding the structure and function of nucleic acids, and learning essential laboratory skills. Sessions included:
- Introduction to the Genomics Gateway and molecular principles
- Sample collection techniques in research
- Mastery of basic pipetting skills
- DNA extraction methods
- Hands-on genomic DNA extraction from plant samples
The day emphasized precision, teamwork, and practical engagement, laying a strong foundation for the intensive training that would follow. Facilitators guided participants through core techniques, building confidence and sparking excitement as they embarked on their scientific journey.
Breakthrough Learning on Day 2: PCR Mastery and Electrophoresis
Day 2 delivered deeper immersion into molecular research techniques and brought participants closer to real-life laboratory applications. Sessions focused on:
- Introduction to Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
- Setting up PCR experiments
- Understanding the theory and principles of gel electrophoresis
- Mastering sample loading and running gels
- DNA visualization and interpretation of electrophoresis results
The highlight of the day was a special virtual interaction with the Director, Prof. George Ude, speaking live from the United States. Prof. Ude encouraged participants to dream boldly, pursue advanced genomic training opportunities, and embrace research as a tool for national development. His address energized the cohort, igniting fresh ambition and a renewed passion for scientific excellence.

Day 3 Grand Finale: Bioinformatics and Emerging Genomic Leaders
The final day marked a culmination of learning, enthusiasm, and accomplishment. Participants delved into Introduction to Bioinformatics, exploring computer-based DNA analysis, a key skill in modern genomics. They worked hands-on with the DNA Subway Blue Line, conducting sequence analysis and interpreting genetic data.
At the closing ceremony, participants proudly received their Certificates of Completion, celebrating three days of dedication, growth, and scientific discovery.

A New Wave of Scientific Minds
The Genomics Gateway Workshop successfully fostered curiosity, academic rigor, and innovation among emerging researchers. With the rapid growth of biotechnology and genomics education across Africa, programs like this serve as vital tools in shaping the future of science, healthcare, and bio-innovation.
As the final moments of the workshop echoed with excitement, one message resonated:
The future of science is unfolding here, and these young minds are poised to lead it.
With a strong foundation now set, participants leave inspired and equipped to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s scientific landscape and to a world that increasingly relies on genomic knowledge to solve global challenges.
