Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria Assesses New DNA Forensics and Science City Facility in Enugu

The drive to revolutionize forensic science and advanced molecular research in Nigeria recorded another milestone on last week as the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria (MLCN) conducted an official assessment visit to the soon-to-be-commissioned Center for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CEDFOCI) / Science City.

The visit, part of the Council’s strategic accreditation mission, underscores the national importance of the ultramodern facility, which is set to become one of the country’s most advanced hubs for forensic analysis, molecular diagnostics, research, and scientific education.

The MLCN delegation was led by Mrs. Christy Igwe, Zonal Head (South East), and Mr. Sunday Nwovu, the team secretary. Upon arrival, the officials embarked on a detailed tour of the center, closely inspecting the state-of-the-art equipment and the infrastructure designed to meet international standards in forensic science and laboratory practice.

They were received and guided by Mr. Michael Okoro, Deputy Director, DNALC Nigeria and Project Manager for CEDFOCI; Mr. Victor Abaa, Laboratory Manager of the facility; and Prof. Miriam Unachukwu, Deputy Provost, College of Medicine, Godfrey Okoye University. The tour provided the Council’s team with firsthand insight into the technological capacity, safety protocols, and operational readiness of the facility.

The MLCN officials expressed strong satisfaction with both the quality and sophistication of the equipment installed at the center. They also commended the level of preparedness exhibited by the CEDFOCI team, noting that the facility reflects a bold step forward in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize forensic investigations, enhance scientific accuracy, and strengthen evidence-based criminal justice processes.

The assessment is a significant step in the facility’s ongoing accreditation journey and forms part of the broader nationwide push for enhanced standards in laboratory science and forensic practice.

As the management continues to align its systems with global best practices, preparations are being intensified ahead of the grand opening of the groundbreaking CEDFOCI / Science City. With its focus on DNA forensics, criminal investigation technologies, molecular diagnostics, and research-driven innovation, the center is expected to become a pivotal asset in advancing science, justice, and national development.
