The Genomics Gateway Workshop, a three-day engaging training on molecular biology and bioinformatics, concluded on a high note, marking another great step in advancing genomic research in Nigeria. Hosted by the DNA Learning Centre Nigeria (DNALC Nigeria), the workshop brought together budding scientists, researchers, and students eager to deepen their understanding of genomics.
A Hands-On Approach to Learning The workshop commenced with a strong foundational introduction to molecular biology. On the first day, participants were taken through the basics of nucleic acids and the central dogma of molecular biology. The session also emphasized essential laboratory techniques, including pipetting, sample collection, DNA extraction, and genomic DNA isolation from plants. These exercises provided attendees with critical skills necessary for genomic studies.

Day two saw participants engage in more advanced molecular biology techniques. Practical sessions included Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) setup, gel electrophoresis, sample loading, and DNA visualization—key processes in modern genetic analysis. The day’s highlight was an inspiring address by Professor George Ude, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DNALC Nigeria, who encouraged participants to see themselves as the future of scientific innovation and research in Nigeria.

The final day of the workshop reached its peak with an in-depth exploration of bioinformatics and sequence analysis using the DNA Subway Blue Line, a digital tool designed for genome annotation and comparative genomics. This hands-on training allowed participants to analyze genetic sequences, reinforcing the importance of computational biology in modern research.

Expanding the Frontiers of Science Education The closing session featured a certificate presentation, recognizing participants’ dedication and successful completion of the workshop. This workshop once again underscored DNALC Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to equipping the next generation of Nigerian scientists with the tools and knowledge necessary to contribute to global scientific advancements.
Looking ahead, DNALC Nigeria has announced its next workshop, “Genome Science and Genetics Using PV92,” scheduled for April 9–11, 2025. This upcoming event promises to offer another enriching opportunity for researchers and students to deepen their genomic expertise. Interested participants are encouraged to register early to secure a spot in this transformative learning experience.
